Guardian Angels

The personal angels given by God to watch over and guide each of us.

The Orthodox Church teaches that every Christian is given a guardian angel — a holy angel assigned by God to watch over, protect, and guide the soul throughout this life.

This is not a poetic idea or a comforting story for children. It is part of the living faith of the Church. From the moment of Baptism, a guardian angel is given to walk with the newly illumined Christian. This angel remains a faithful companion, rejoicing in our repentance, grieving over our sins, and continually interceding for us before God.

The guardian angel does not force the will. We remain free. But the angel works quietly — strengthening us in moments of temptation, prompting us toward prayer, and protecting us from spiritual and physical dangers according to the will of God. Many of the saints speak of a deep awareness of this unseen companionship.

The Church encourages us to remember our guardian angel, to give thanks for this gift, and to ask for the angel’s help. A simple and traditional prayer is:

O Holy Angel of God, my Guardian, pray to God for me.

In a world that often feels lonely and exposed, the teaching about guardian angels is a quiet reminder that no Christian walks alone. Even when we cannot see or feel it, we are accompanied by a holy presence that loves us and labors for our salvation.
