Remembered on November 6
Paul the Confessor of Constantinople
- ConfessorA saint who suffered persecution for the faith but was not put to death as a martyr.
All confessors - HieromartyrA bishop, priest, or deacon who suffered martyrdom for Christ.
All hieromartyrs - BishopA bishop honored as a saint for faithfully shepherding the Church.
All bishops
Paul was bishop of Constantinople in the fourth century, when disputes about Christ’s divinity divided the Church and drew in the emperors. He defended the faith confessed at Nicaea and was repeatedly driven from his city. The Church remembers him as a confessor: someone who openly held to the faith despite suffering. His remembrance asks us to value faithfulness more than safety, position, or the approval of those in power.
How he died
Paul was martyred by strangulation while in exile at Cucusus, in what is now Turkey.
