Martin of Tours
- BishopA bishop honored as a saint for faithfully shepherding the Church.
All bishops - VenerableA saint remembered for a holy life of monastic prayer, self-denial, and service to God.
All venerable
Martin lived in the fourth century, serving first as a soldier and later as a monk and bishop of Tours in what is now France. His early biographer tells how he divided his cloak with a man suffering from the cold. As bishop, Martin kept a simple monastic life and cared for the people entrusted to him. His remembered kindness asks something practical of us: to notice the person who needs help.
How he died
He reposed in peace after an illness in 397.
