Catherine of Alexandria
- Great MartyrA martyr whom the Church especially honors with this title for outstanding witness and endurance in suffering.
All great martyrs
Catherine is remembered as a learned Christian woman of Alexandria during the Roman persecutions. Her traditional life tells of her defending the faith before powerful rulers and educated opponents, refusing to abandon Christ. The surviving accounts were written much later, and many details cannot be established with certainty. The Church honors her as a witness whose learning served her faith, inviting us to use what we know with courage and humility.
