Remembered on December 6

Nicholas the Wonderworker

Nicholas was bishop of Myra in Lycia, in what is now Turkey, in the fourth century. The Church remembers him for generosity, care for the vulnerable and the many miracles associated with his prayers. Tradition tells of gifts given secretly to help an impoverished family, and of his defense of people unjustly condemned. His remembrance invites us to notice another person’s need and help without making ourselves the center of the story.

How he died

Tradition holds that he reposed in peace in old age.
