Remembered on December 7
Ambrose of Milan
- BishopA bishop honored as a saint for faithfully shepherding the Church.
All bishops
Ambrose was a Roman governor before becoming bishop of Milan in 374. He gave himself to learning Scripture, teaching the faith and caring for his people. When Emperor Theodosius ordered a massacre at Thessalonica, Ambrose called him to repentance rather than treating royal power as an excuse. His writings and hymns continued to serve the Church. His remembrance asks us to join learning with responsibility, and to speak truth even when it is uncomfortable.
How he died
He reposed in peace in 397.
