Remembered on December 11
Daniel the Stylite
- VenerableA saint remembered for a holy life of monastic prayer, self-denial, and service to God.
All venerable
Daniel was a fifth-century monk from Syria who settled near Constantinople. He spent many years praying on a raised platform atop a pillar, which is why he is called a stylite. People came to him for counsel, including emperors. An early account of his life records his concern for hospitality, unity and love among his followers. His unusual calling is not a pattern everyone must copy, but his patient prayer and care for others belong to the whole Church.
