Remembered on November 9

Onesiphorus and Porphyrius

Onesiphorus and Porphyrius are remembered together as martyrs of the Roman persecutions. The surviving accounts disagree about when and where they lived, but describe their refusal to deny Christ under torture. We know little else about them with confidence. Their place in the Church’s prayer reminds us that a life does not need a long surviving record to be remembered before God.

How they died

Tradition holds that they were killed by being dragged behind horses.
