St. Abercius, Equal-to-the-Apostles

Abercius is remembered as a bishop of Hieropolis in Phrygia, in what is now Turkey, during the second century. An ancient inscription associated with him describes journeys to Rome and eastward, and the welcome he found among fellow Christians. Its images of fish, bread, and wine speak of the faith and shared meal that bound them together. The Church calls him Equal-to-the-Apostles for his work in spreading the Gospel. His remembrance brings us close to the early Church.
