St. Artemius the Great Martyr

Artemius held a senior military command in Egypt during the fourth century. Church tradition holds that Artemius openly challenged the emperor’s treatment of Christians and suffered rather than abandon his faith. Accounts differ about the charges brought against him, but his Christian witness became the heart of his remembrance in the Church. His life asks a difficult question: what are we prepared to lose for the faith we profess?

How he died

He was martyred by beheading at Antioch under Emperor Julian, who sought to restore pagan worship.
