Remembered on October 27

St. Nestor of Thessalonica

Nestor’s remembrance is closely joined to that of St. Demetrius in Thessalonica, around the beginning of the fourth century. Tradition holds that this young Christian sought the imprisoned saint’s blessing before facing the emperor’s champion, Lyaeus, in the arena. The Church remembers him as a martyr who placed his trust in Christ. His story gives us a young man seeking prayer and courage from another believer when the danger before him was very real.

How he died

Tradition holds that Nestor defeated Lyaeus and was then beheaded on the emperor's orders.
