Theosis

Union with God by grace — the aim of the Christian life.

Theosis is the Orthodox word for the purpose of the Christian life: that human beings might share in the life of God by grace.

This does not mean that we become God by nature. The Creator remains Creator, and the creature remains creature. But by grace, the saints teach, we are called to participate in God’s life — to be transformed in love, purified in heart, and drawn into communion with the Holy Trinity.

Saint Athanasius expressed it with famous simplicity: God became man so that man might become god — meaning, by grace. The Incarnation is not only for forgiveness. It is for healing and restoration. Christ takes our humanity upon Himself in order to raise it into the life of God.

Theosis is not a technique and not a rare mystical prize for a few. It is the direction of ordinary Orthodox life: repentance, prayer, the Holy Mysteries, love of neighbor, and the slow purifying of the passions. Through these, the grace of God works in us.

In this light, salvation is more than being spared. It is being made whole. It is the journey from fragmentation to communion, from the darkness of self-love toward the light of divine love.
