1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, 2To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 7As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; 8Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. 9For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

Gospel
Luke 12:42-48
Traditional
42And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? 43Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 44Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. 45But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; 46The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

42The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? 43Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. 44Truly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has. 45But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and to be drunken, 46then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn’t expecting him and in an hour that he doesn’t know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful. 47That servant who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, 48but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.

Onesiphorus and Porphyrius are remembered together as martyrs of the Roman persecutions. The surviving accounts disagree about when and where they lived, but describe their refusal to deny Christ under torture. We know little else about them with confidence. Their place in the Church’s prayer reminds us that a life does not need a long surviving record to be remembered before God.
How they died Tradition holds that they were killed by being dragged behind horses.
BishopA bishop honored as a saint for faithfully shepherding the Church. All bishops →
WonderworkerA saint through whose prayers God has worked miracles. All wonderworkers →
Nectarios lived from 1846 to 1920 and served as bishop of Pentapolis in Egypt. After losing his position unjustly, he continued teaching and serving the Church in Greece. He guided a school for priests in Athens and founded the Holy Trinity monastery for women on Aegina. Remembered for humility and patient care, he shows how a life of service can continue even after a painful disappointment.
How he died He reposed in peace in an Athens hospital after an illness.
Also remembered today: Our Venerable Father John the Dwarf (John the Short) (4th c.); Our Holy Mother Matrona (492); Saint Symeon Metaphrastes (960).
